The Inquisition (Summoner #2) by Taran Matharu - #review #giveaway

More demons, epic battles, and fights to the death: introducing the unmissable next installment in the Summoner Trilogy...

On trial for a crime he did not commit, Fletcher must face the Inquisition who will decide his future - the process is gruelling, lead by those who will do anything to see him suffer and haunted by ghosts from the past with clues to Fletcher's tragic origins.

But Fletcher has little time to dwell on these new revelations when the king announces a deadly challenge to the graduating students at Vocans. One that involves entering Orc territory to complete a risky mission. With loyal demons by their sides, commoners and nobles, dwarves and elves must overcome barriers of class and race and work together to triumph. The reward: a fortune in gold, the safety of an empire and PEACE.

With the entire empire watching, Fletcher has much to prove, but there are those out to get him and it soon becomes clear that there's a traitor in their midst, trying to thwart the mission and create unrest within the Empire.

With everything stacked against him, Fletcher must use everything in his power to fight his way to victory.

MY REVIEW

I was more than pleasantly surprised when I began reading The Inquisition, the 2nd installment of Taran Mathau's "Summoner" series.  You see, I don't read overly much in either the paranormal or the young adult genres.

But Fletcher and Ignatius (his loyal companion demon) had me from the get go.  Reading about the conditions in the cell where they were imprisoned for over a year made my skin crawl.  (And I still shiver just thinking about it!)

Then there's the part where Fletcher is brought before the "Inquisition", who seem every bit as nasty as their namesake.  Fletcher has been falsely accused of treason, and many of the powers that be have been (and are) stacking the deck against him, hoping to railroad Fletcher into an early demise.  But the young man is not without his friends either.  I probably would have been executed right in the courtroom, because I almost cannot resist mouthing off when I see an injustice being committed.

And that is only half the story.  It is decided that four small teams made up of humans, dwarves and elves will penetrate the enemy orc's territory and destroy a feared 'weapon' the orcs are hatching in their sacred temple.  A number of Fletcher's detractors are in one of the groups.  So while he has been exonerated, Fletcher is far from free.

I think my sons had as much fun watching me read this book as they would have reading it themselves.  This is just the type of story they would enjoy, hearken as it seems to me to a LOTR type saga.  I would read and *ahem* verbalize my feelings when the injustices were being done to Fletcher, and cheer when he or his team had successes.  And it brought up wonderful discussions on right and wrong, comparing and contrasting elven and dwarfish lore from series to series and author to author.

I will be reading the other installments in this series at some point in the future.  And if you, or someone you know, maybe even in your own family enjoy a paranormal adventure, I definitely recommend The Inquisition.
